Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia on the agreements signed on the joint protection of borders between Russia and Sokhumi and Tskhinvali

Georgia strictly condemns the so-called agreements on the joint protection of borders signed on 30 April 2009 by representatives of the Russian Federation and the Sokhumi and Tskhinvali proxy regimes. The scope of the ‘agreements' is to provide protection of the so-called state border of Georgia's occupied territories. The truth, however, is that the ‘agreements' represent Russia's yet another attempt to strengthen military build-up on Georgia's occupied territories and legitimize the occupation process.

Comment by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia on the interview of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Mr. Sergei Lavrov, given to the BBC Russian service

The detailed comments by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia given to the BBC Russian service, pertaining to the legality of recognition of Georgia's inalienable territories - Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region - by the Russian side, is an attempt by the Russian Federation to justify its action and with this view, it certainly deserves a comment.

Mr. Lavrov is trying to base the arguments on norms and principles of international law in order to justify Russia's unlawful actions. As always, Russian position carries an explicitly demagogic character and is built on false arguments.
